Coastal Cottage Style
Our clients were excited to build their new home adjacent to their daughter’s home in Montgomery County. They met with our professional design team to discuss their design choices and decided on coastal cottage. What is a coastal cottage style?
This design choice draws from the lifestyle and beauty of the ocean and has a airy feel full of light, pastels, neutral colors and natural textures. The colors reflect the landscape of most beach front property mimicking the colors of sky, sea and sand.
Our client was looking for a more informal decor and found that the coastal style was perfect for the more laid-back, comfortable life they hoped for in their golden years. The casual look is calming, warm and peaceful. Perfect for retirement.

The Open Floorplan
The Kitchen
Choosing a single run kitchen cabinet design with Nordic-painted Holiday Kitchens Frameless Cabinetry in Mission “Shaker” as perimeter cabinets makes for a functioning workspace that is both beautiful and bright. The contrasting Laguna blue island cabinet, the color of the sea, complements the white cabinetry and further showcases the coastal style. The 30/70 split glass cabinets in the right corner gives a sense of height and openness with a perfect place for displaying treasures. Utilizing space perfectly the large pantry cabinet in the kitchen provides ample storage behind closed doors. Lastly, the microwave convection oven is tucked away in a cabinet drawer keeping the counter space free and clear.
Adding to the light and bright feel are the oversized BOZEMAN pendants with seeded glass making a perfect focal point as conversations are had during meal prep at the seated island with stunning Olympus Eris Quartz countertop. The stainless-steel chimney style hood gives the proper ventilation in a clean and simple look.

Living & Dining Area
The open concept welcomes you from the kitchen into the living room equipped with neutral furnishings and a Feizy 8 x 10″ boho style rug in beige, gray with just a touch of blue to pull the island into the space. and dining room. Complementing the Fairfield Welted Slope Arm sofa in linen with Flint Finish and spring down cushions is a Fairfield Claudia Power Recliner in Cliff with Tobacco finish leather chair which offers a great place to sit and read. The Revwood Plus Cypresta Pumice Oak flooring throughout ties all the spaces together.
French doors allow fresh air into the main living space and opens up to a three-season screened porch. From any area in the living room, you can gaze at the private, lush landscape as it changes each season. If needed custom French pleated window treatments can be pulled together for privacy or to block the sun for better television viewing.
The focal point of the room and adding to the coastal cottage coziness is the new gas fireplace with wood surround mantle. The television is conveniently installed above the fireplace and offers an inviting place to sit and enjoy a cup of tea with a roaring fire while watching your favorite show.
Tucked into the corner of this open floorplan is a Fairfield Beveled Edge 48″ round dining table and upholstered chairs for more formal dining than a sandwich at the seated island.

Primary Bedroom Suite
Offering convenient single floor living the client’s bedroom, bath and large walk-in closet are located off of the living room with access also from the dining area. We continued the coastal cottage style and went with a traditional classic porcelain tile that looks like Carrera marble on the bathroom floor. We brought in the beautiful ocean blue throughout on the shower walls in a classic subway tile and pattern. Choosing a real marble mosaic tile on the shower floor adds a touch of elegance and complements both the bathroom floor and shower walls. The warm wood tone of the free-standing vanity makes for a calm and inviting space and the backlit LED mirrors gives you a warm glow in the evenings and a great place to prepare for the day or getting ready for bed.

Closet, Den and Laundry
A large walk-in closet was created adjacent to the primary bathroom and offers plenty of room for both husband and wife’s clothing and for dressing together on a busy day.
A den for them to do paperwork was added to the hallway that joins the two homes and supplies the owner with a place for files and records needed for their business.
The client’s profession required him to have a place at home to sterilize his equipment and have a place to store it. We added a stainless-steel sink for this process and rollouts to accommodate the equipment. Tall pantries for extra storage and a beautiful custom cubby for hanging coats, purses and stashing boots in an organized way is immediately accessed from the back yard. This laundry/mudroom is perfect for joining the main home with this new in-law addition and sports a full-size stackable washer and dryer shared by both families.

The goal was to create a two-story addition that looked as though it had been built with the original home. We kept the same architecture of the existing home and beautifully blended both with a inside staircase from the parking area to the main living area. The hallway brings both homes together with the mudroom and door to the backyard shared by both families.
